Context

I served as the Product Designer at SCAD, leading the end-to-end process from primary research and ideation to high-fidelity UI design and user testing.

Problem

U.S. households throw away nearly 32% of their food ($1,866/year) simply because they forget what they own or can’t track expiration dates.

Solution

Amazon Smart Grocery plan is an add-on service to the Amazon Prime Now app which will help prime users to reduce their domestic food waste.

Research & Insights

We followed a Design Thinking double-diamond approach, beginning with secondary research into EPA data, which identified domestic food waste as the highest-opportunity area for intervention.


  • 41 Online Surveys: 61% of respondents throw away fresh food often; 52% find labels confusing.

  • 18 In-depth Interviews: Users expressed guilt over wasting money (avg. $100/mo) and frustration with "fridge blindness."

  • 4 Ethnographic Studies: Observed users in their home environments to see how food is stored and forgotten.

Meet Clark & Carol

Analyzing the potential user of our problem would be the next step. I decided to have two types of personas: a family and a singular individual.

User research revealed 2 main pain points

After defining our personas, I mapped their current grocery habits against the new Amazon Smart Grocery Plan experience. This allowed me to pinpoint exactly where our digital intervention could solve physical frustrations.

Designing features for smart grocery plan

I used sketches to translate research insights into core features for the add-on service. These designs directly address the need for awareness, visibility, and consciousness in grocery management—the primary pain points identified during our interviews and surveys.

Mapping interactions across all services

I developed a service map to align people, digital props, and processes within the Amazon ecosystem. By integrating with Whole Foods, this service provides intelligent reminders that transform grocery shopping into a mindful habit, driving personal and social change toward zero food waste.

Facilitating workshop to test the solution

I developed a service map to align people, digital props, and processes within the Amazon ecosystem. By integrating with Whole Foods, this service provides intelligent reminders that transform grocery shopping into a mindful habit, driving personal and social change toward zero food waste.

Structuring information for easy navigation

After the concept workshop, I analyzed feedback refined IA, and designed the user flow. I added the smart grocery plan as an add-on service to the Amazon Prime Now app.
