Context
The furniture industry faces a critical sustainability crisis driven by high consumer mobility. In the U.S. alone, 35.5 million people move annually, leading to 15 million tons of furniture ending up in landfills. While millennials increasingly prioritize flexibility and "disownership" over long-term possession, the market lacks circular systems that allow furniture to be easily returned, refurbished, or reused. This project was developed at SCAD to empower industry innovators to transition from wasteful linear models to profitable circular economies.
Problem
Current furniture consumption is inefficient, expensive, and unsustainable.
The Mobility Gap: People moving for work or education buy "fast furniture" due to low cost and high convenience, but they struggle to resell or transport it when they move again.
The Intent-Action Gap: While 74% of users express a desire for sustainable "buy-back" or rental options, a lack of awareness and available services forces them into a "giveaway or landfill" mindset.
Industry Inertia: Furniture brands lack the structured frameworks and collaborative tools needed to redesign their services for a circular economy (estimated to be a $1T opportunity).
Solution
I designed Creculare, a comprehensive toolkit for designers and business leaders to facilitate co-creation workshops. The toolkit breaks down complex circular economy principles into three actionable components:
Phase 01: Trigger Cards: 24 research-backed "What if..." cards that translate user pain points into ideation prompts.
Phase 02: Facilitation Guide: A step-by-step framework that guides teams through the circular design process, from empathy mapping to system-wide service design.
Phase 03: Strategy Worksheets: Collaborative canvases designed to map product lifecycles, identify "leakage" in the system, and bridge gaps between user needs and business feasibility.

Impact
Industry Validation: The prototype was tested with design and business leadership from Wayfair, confirming the toolkit’s value in gamifying circular design and simplifying the transition for large-scale retailers.
Strategic Realignment: Successfully pivoted the project during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating adaptability by transitioning the toolkit for virtual collaboration and remote workshop environments.
Educational Framework: Developed a scalable model for "Circular Practice" that moves beyond product aesthetics to focus on Service-System Design, addressing the root causes of furniture waste.
